If you have visited the stores lately, you probably have noticed empty shelves and carts filled with hand sanitizer, paper towels, and water. No, there is not a hurricane coming; but the public is in a panic over the possibility of becoming infected with the Coronavirus (COVID-19).

Let’s take a minute to breathe and find out what exactly is COVID-19?

The Coronavirus (COVID-19) was first detected in late December 2019 in the city of Wuhan, China.  It is a novel and unstudied illness that can affect the respiratory system and can lead to pneumonia.  Symptoms can be fever, cough, shortness of breath, sneezing and a runny nose.  It can take as little as 2 days to as long as 14 days for these symptoms to appear.  These are typical flu like symptoms, but this strain of Corona acts differently than any other upper respiratory tract illness.

The Coronavirus initiated at an animal seafood market in Wuhan, China and has since spread to other countries.  It can be transferable between humans with close contact, coughing or sneezing, and between animals and people.  COVID-19 has now infected over 90,000 people with over 3,000 deaths.

Chances are not high at the moment unless you have traveled to Wuhan, China, the epicenter of the outbreak. The elderly and those with compromised immune systems may be at a higher risk of developing a more serious illness if exposed to COVID-19.

How can you protect you and your family?

  1. Take steps to boost your immune system (see list below).
  2. Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, and repeat many times during the day.
  3. Avoid close contact with sick people.
  4. Sneeze into your elbow.
  5. Don’t touch your face.
  6. Keep active and exercise.
  7. Use essential oils to help boost immunity (OnGuard or Thieves).
